We Lit Book Review: Wise Wendell ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

In Wise Wendell, a curious seven-year-old discovers a white hair and worries that he’s growing old. He asks his mother, father, and teacher for answers, but it’s his grandparents who help solve the mystery.

Mark Allen Boone’s rhyming story is a sweet read-aloud for children and grown-ups to enjoy together. Wendell’s funny worry makes the story engaging, while his search for an answer opens the door to a meaningful conversation about family, growing up, and learning from people with more life experience. We give Wise Wendell five stars for its playful verse, warm illustrations, and lovely message about the wisdom grandparents can share.

Try this together: The Family Wisdom Question

After reading, invite your child to choose someone in the family—such as a grandparent, aunt, uncle, or trusted adult—and ask: “What is something you learned when you were my age that you think I should know?” Let your child draw or write down the answer, then share one thing they hope to remember.

Wise Wendell is a heartwarming choice for families who enjoy reading, talking, and learning together.

Wise Wendell tells the story of a seven-year-old African American boy who, insisting that he is old enough to groom himself, discovers a single white hair on his head. Frightened by the unusual sight, he fears that he is growing old.

Seeking an explanation, he questions his mother, father, and teacher, none of whom provide a satisfactory explanation for him. Finally coming to his rescue are his doting grandparents who attend his birthday celebration and provide the answer that he seeks.

The theme is that one doesn't gain wisdom on his own: he must seek it from those who have it, and its pursuit is worthwhile, no matter the age. Because of its engaging illustrations, whimsical rhyme scheme, vocabulary building, and use of idioms, Wise Wendell is a book that parents and grandparents can enjoy reading aloud with their children and grandchildren.
